Is kindness a weakness and does kindness have a place in a workplace environment?
The great philosopher, Aristotle, said that ‘kindness is a character strength’
My answer to this question would be that kindness is definitely not a weakness. In fact, it is more a strength than a weakness. When organizational leaders are kind, employees want to emulate this behavior and are encouraged to perform acts of kindness of their own resulting in becoming happier and better team players. Happy workers want to come to work and they want to please their supervisors by doing a good job. Kind employees hold themselves accountable and they follow instructions. They work harder and smarter thus affecting the organization’s bottom line. “Kindness increases diversity in hiring and fights against sexism, racism and homophobia”. Kind people treat each other with respect and in a kind environment, there are fewer incidents of sexual harassment and of bullying.
I have witnessed, first-hand, the positive impact of kindness in a workplace environment and so for me, kindness does have a place in the workplace beginning with the recruiting and hiring process resulting in employee satisfaction, very low turnover rates and high productivity levels.
According to Henry James, “Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. The third is to be kind.”
Featured Book
I Am Marley, The Jamdung dog...The Kind, Kind, Kind Dog is a children's book about a talking Yorkshire Terrier who describes himself as being kind. He is kind to everybody he meets and he wants the entire world to know that he is kind even when his incessant barking gets his neighbors upset. He argues that he barks to say "hello" and "how do you do". He argues that being kind is also being respectful and that he shows respect to his parents, his teachers and to all his friends and implores everyone to always do good and to be kind to everyone.
